Jaz followed Shane to a shitty little motel on the highway. It wasn’t a place that inspired confidence with regards to cleanliness, but it was private enough. The room was surprisingly nice and clean, and she sat on the little loveseat in front of the TV while Shane set his things down on the table next to the kitchenette.

He didn’t sit, though. He closed the door, locked it, and ran his hands against the dark stubble on his head, resting them there and fisting his fingers. He looked at her, and then away, muttering something too quietly for her to catch.

“You’re not a cop, are you?” She asked, honestly curious, but also wanting to break him out of his rut.

Shane stopped pacing. “I used to be, but not anymore.”

She left it at that, from his tone he didn’t seem eager to answer more questions. “So I guess I’ll just tell you what I know?” It was half a question, half a statement. “Though how about you sit down for this? It’s not that great of a story.”

She expected him to sit at the table, but he chose to plop down next to her on the loveseat, disturbingly close. The pent up lust tried to sneak up on her, making her skin ultra-sensitive to every shift in the air. If he leaned the tiniest bit closer she would get a whiff of his too delicious scent. But she wasn’t an animal, and she wouldn’t be ruled by whatever it was between them. She scooted as far as she could, her side butting up against the chair with barely a foot of space in between them.

“So you’re a werewolf?” He asked. He didn’t look at her, instead focusing on the small refrigerator right in front of them.

Jaz wasn’t sure if she should avoid looking at him as well, but she’d always been taught to try to make eye-contact while speaking, and even with this audience, she didn’t want to stop that. So she looked at him, studying the harsh lines of his profile. “It’s crazy, huh.” He didn’t respond, but Jaz didn’t let that discourage her. “It started about six months ago. I went to work as a researcher at Silver Sky, and not too long after that, they did something to me. I’m still not sure if it was the company itself or if the guy experimenting on us was acting alone, but they gave me a cocktail of drugs, injections, and held me in a cell for months.” She shuddered, her mind flashing to that impersonal room where she was treated like a lab rat. They followed procedure, made sure she had ample food, water, clothing, but she had no control over her life. They turned her into something not human in that place.

She shook her head and continued. “I didn’t know what they did. I had no idea how long I was gone, but my brother alerted the pack here and they got me out. Abigail, too. Jake got infected by them as well, but we’re all good now.
